Twilight & IKEA

According to a recent press release by TT, IKEA Portland is hosting an event with TalkingTwilight.com on August 22nd to celebrate the phenomenon we call Twilight. They will also help us give away T-shirts and a pair of tickets to the three day event which benefits Doernbecher’s Children's hospital. IKEA will be donating a replica set up of Edwards room from the movie to the event which will be autographed by attending actors at the event and then auctioned off for Doernbecher's Children's Hospital.

With over 42 million books in the Twilight series of four books by Stephenie Meyers sold and over $177 million in tickets sold domestically for the first movie in the series (the eighth highest-growing movie of the year), the website talkingtwilight.com announces the first annual Twilight convention at the Holiday Inn Convention center near the Portland airport August 28th – August 30th, 2009.

Sweet Three Bean Salad

 

1 can cut green beans
1 can cut wax beans
1 can red kidney beans
1 cup sugar
2 tsp. salt
1⁄2 tsp. pepper
1/3 cup salad oil
1⁄2 cup vinegar
1 small bell pepper, chopped
1 small onion, chopped
1 stalk celery, chopped

Drain beans. Mix together sugar, salt, pepper, oil, and vinegar. Pour over drained beans. Add chopped onion, pepper, and celery. Refrigerate overnight. Serve well drained.

In a 2003 IKEA commercial a young woman discards a red lamp on a street curb. Sitting next to a black trash bag in the rain, the lamp appears cold and lonely. Inside a nearby home, the woman lovingly touches her new lamp. A melancholy tune plays in the background, and the camera pans to the lamp as its neck sags and shade droops. Out of nowhere, a man with a Scandinavian accent pops in to say: "Many of you feel bad for this lamp. That is because you're crazy. It has no feelings. And the new one is much better."

The IKEA spot, created by ad agency Crispin Porter + Bogusky in Miami, was chosen as the funniest TV commercial among 37 viewed by six judges from the advertising industry and one in the comedy business. Market research and communication firm Luntz, Maslansky Strategic Research, a unit of Omnicom Group ( OMC - news - people ), provided handheld meters that allowed the judges to record second-by-second reactions to the commercials, which dated from 1965.

Just in time for moving season, Ikea has released its 2010 catalogue.

"At Ikea, we are not happy until it’s free," claims Marty Marston, product public-relations manager for the chain.

So how good are the savings this year?

Throughout the catalogue are items tagged "New lower prices!" — and Ikea fans will be thrilled.

Take the Granas table and four chairs, a sleek steel-and-glass set: it dropped from last year’s $249 to $179.

The uber-comfy Ektorp sofa prized by New Yorkers for its versatile set of slipcovers, ability to fit into tight spots (and super-low price) is $499 this year, a whopping $100 less than in 2009.

2010 Centennial Store Opening???

Rumors abound that the Colorado IKEA store in Centennial MAY open in 2010 ... I’m investigating now. A May 8, 2009 e-mail directly from IKEA indicated a 2012 opening for the Colorado IKEA store. My friends at IKEA Fans told me that 2010 was rumored as the opening year at the 2010 catalogue launch event. I'll continue to investigate and report updates to you.
