The Never Ending Job explains IKEA's strategy on sustainability

May 25, 2010 (USA)

IKEA has released its 2009 Sustainability Report (September 1, 2008 – August 31, 2009), which recaps and highlights its progress in many areas including integrating sustainability into all IKEA strategies as well as the entire product life cycle. This integrated way of thinking is rudimentary in order to tackle some of the environmental challenges that our world faces today. Aptly named 'The Never Ending Job,' the report explains IKEA's continued focus on identifying good resources and using more efficient materials.
"IKEA is obsessed with making more from less, and we don't like to waste resources of any kind. This will continue to be our compass in years to come, and we will stimulate new thinking and innovation in our sustainability work," stated Mikael Ohlsson, President and CEO, IKEA Group.
The IKEA Sustainability Report 2009 details the retailer's local, national and global sustainability progress relative to the large and complex supply chain, working condition situations, carbon dioxide emissions and access to raw materials that are produced in a more sustainable manner.
While the report is rich with many details, key highlights worth noting are climate change activities, supplier activities, social initiative programs, US activities, and the soon to be launched IKEA in-store 'Never Ending Job' list. This is a customer communications campaign to share IKEA's sustainable activities within the framework that being sustainable is a never ending job.

Ikea Flat-Pack Furniture Is Hot On Long Island! … soon in Colorado too!

The flat-packed furniture at Ikea is great for both its ease of transportation and the smaller dent it puts on the finances when compared with traditional furniture.

Long Islanders are coming to see ready-to-assemble furniture as the best cost-conscious move they can make for their home decoration project in a bad economy. The cost of a dining room set alone can cost thousands of dollars; imagine furnishing an entire house with pieces costing so much! It could bankrupt you! Ready-to-assemble furniture is what Long Island shoppers have been looking for: quality furniture that won't bankrupt them. The secret is the reduction in labor that comes wiith removal of the assembly process at the factory.

The advent of ready-to-assemble furniture helps the purchase price, but it also cuts down the cost of shipping and handling. Transportation costs go way down when furniture is sent in flat boxes rather than bulky packaging for pre-assembled pieces. Furniture can be shipped from an Ikea distribution center at a fraction of the cost it would be for pre-assembled furniture from the manufacturer. Compare this with delivery charges from a traditional furniture store, or shipping charges from the factory. The difference will shock you, we think.

IKEA makes improvements with every new store they open

IKEA offers much more than furniture

 DSC_0237

Those who have been following the evolution of IKEA for years know that it has been making strong improvements with the newer stores that have opened around the country. But those who haven’t been keeping up are often surprised to find that the location near them has much more than stylish furniture and budget prices - and for many, the surprise is pleasant. If you’ve heard about how great the retailer is, but haven’t explored it for yourself, then take a journey with me to find out what IKEA locations are offering to “wow” their customers.

Of course, the major selling point for IKEA locations around the country is their trendy, yet inexpensive, furniture. Many are amazed when they walk into one of these warehouse-sized stores to find tons of inexpensive options everywhere. It is not uncommon in one of their stores to locate a very nice leather sofa for under $1000. And if you’re lucky, you will probably find a great armchair to match for even less - that is, if it hasn’t already been snatched up by the person who was standing behind you eyeballing it. But many first-time customers are being surprised by more than just the prices and styles when the take a good look around the store. This is because IKEA has stepped into the arena of the superstore with their new features.

For example, don’t be surprised if you walk into one of the newer IKEA stores only to be greeted by the scent of Swedish cuisine. Because it seems the retailer recognized the need for customers to be comfortable in their stores, they added an in-store restaurant serving American and Swedish meals. I’ve also heard that some locations include a bistro or café inside, and a Swedish Food Market. While I don’t suppose it is entirely necessary to include all of this in a furniture store, it does give people a chance to experience the culture of the man who started the company, Ingvar Kamprad, who is from Sweden.

Something else that customers, and especially parents, are raving about is the inclusion of the children’s play area in many IKEA locations around the country. The play area is not unlike many that you can find in malls except for one major bonus: it is supervised. This means many parents can take their children to IKEA, drop them off at the play area, shop at their own pace, grab the kids afterward, get a bite to eat then leave. It is the perfect solution for those who don’t have a babysitter. And of course, it can help wear those little rugrats out so that when they get home, they’ll be full and tired - the perfect formula for early bedtime.

Some other extras IKEA locations include rental vans, a Kids Club with discounts and special events, a free appointment with one of their furniture consultants, and free in-store measuring and designing tools. With all of the extras they’re offering, it seems these IKEA locations have learned the art of keeping a customer - and by doing so they, of course, gain extra business. But this isn’t a bad thing, because you as the customer reap the benefit - and no one loses in a win-win situation.

The basics of IKEA's distribution services

image image
Distribution Services functions as the wholesaler for IKEA, securing local storage capacity for stores and purchasing products from suppliers all over the world. Products are shipped from suppliers to distribution centers, where they are unloaded, stored in racking, and then re-loaded onto road
transport vehicles when ordered by stores. The fundamental goal is to handle goods as efficiently as possible. In some cases, goods are shipped directly from suppliers to stores, or held on the dock of a distribution center for just a short time before being shipped out again. This emphasis on efficiency helps IKEA achieve affordable prices for our store customers.

IKEA "Builds in" Environmental Commitment

image

IKEA stores themselves also have environmental measures incorporated into their design, construction and operation. IKEA sorts waste in order to maximize recycling of cardboard, metal, plastic and wood materials. Also, IKEA installs automated systems to optimize the use of HVAC and lights inside its stores, minimizing electricity needs. In addition, the HVAC system adopted by IKEA reflects the Best Available Control Technology for being free of ozone-depleting refrigerants. Local, state and municipal guidelines and regulations may provide other opportunities for IKEA to include environmentally responsible paint,
construction materials, drainage systems, etc. Additionally, IKEA constantly evaluates opportunities to reduce energy usage in the operation of all its U.S. stores, distribution centers and offices. This proactive initiative includes a comprehensive survey and effort focused on implementing energy conservation measures wherever and whenever possible.

IKEA Centennial to be first US store with advanced energy saving technology

The ground breaking ceremony at 11am Mountain time this morning was exciting!  All the press was there and city officials … and of course major IKEA executives.

I learned that IKEA's U.S. Real Estate Manager, Doug Greenholz, is a Denver area resident and has been for quite some time!  One of the cutest moments of the ceremony was when he looked at his mother in the audience and said "Mom, now you can tell all your friends IKEA Centennial is on its way"!  Doug also said he's so glad he no longer has to answer the same question over and over again from family & friends, "When is IKEA going to build a store in Colorado?"

IKEA Centennial will be the best store IKEA has ever built, incorporating all that IKEA has learned about building stores.  It is especially important to note that it will include an advanced energy system referenced as "geothermal component".  Interestingly, the store will actually be elevated!  There will be two parking levels:  one underground and one at ground level.  The first floor of the store will actually be elevated 15' above ground level.  The store will have the familiar two floors.

It was nice to meet Joseph Roth, IKEA's U.S. Public Affairs Manager.  I've exchanged some e-mails with him about the new store.  Joseph is cast properly … a great speaker and crowd pleaser!

Everyone in attendance received an IKEA catalog (BTW, 200 million are printed, and it is the largest circulation of a free publication in the world!), some samples of Swedish food specialties (no meatballs!), and the commemorative ground breaking ceremony piece shown above.

YAY!  It's real!  Fall 2011 … hurry up!

It's so close!

In March, IKEA formally announced that its first Colorado store would open in the fall of 2011. But another deadline is much closer, and IKEA fans are counting down the seconds -- literally.

A blogspot for Colorado IKEA fans has two separate countdown clocks. One ticks away the time before the grand opening, which is approximately 73 weeks, four days and twenty hours away at this writing. More immediately, however, is groundbreaking at the construction site, which will take place tomorrow. As I type this sentence, it's just under 22 hours away.

By the way, the site linked above isn't affiliated with IKEA -- just with folks who love the place. Also included are links to local news items, like a Channel 4 report from last month featuring 29 whole seconds of IKEA bliss plus a collection of the top ten IKEA ads of the past decade.

Like the ones Coloradans will be able to see next year.

Top 10 TV ads over the past 10 years

Ikea in the States outshines everyone in 2003 with an ad titled ‘Lamp’. Crispin Porter + Bogusky Miami and creative director Alex Bogusky is behind the ad. The minute long commercial is about an abandoned table lamp. Cold and alone, most people would feel sorry for the poor lamp. A Swedish man (Ikea originated in Sweden) appears towards the end to bust the depressing mood and remind consumers that feeling sentimental about furniture is plain crazy.
